Topline Summary

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to have a major impact on international tourism in Asia Pacific during 3Q2020. This was confirmed by a severe contraction of over 90 percent in international visitor arrivals (IVAs) into 38 destinations in the Asia Pacific region that have released third quarter 2020 data, with visitors number dropping from close to 150 million to less than 14 million compared to the same period last year.

Key Highlights

  • In the Americas region, the overall regional performance reported a decrease of 85.7 percent, resulting in a collective loss of 41.6 million IVAs for the quarter. This reduction was well over half of the inbound volume of foreign arrivals from the same period last year.

  • Northeast Asia registered the largest decline in IVAs in Asia during this period, dropping sharply by 97 percent year-on-year. The impact on the inbound count was a contraction of 36.1 million, reducing the total IVA number to a little more than one million from 37.2 million for the same period last year.

  • In South Asia, the Maldives reported a 95.1% year-on-year decrease in visitor movement in this quarter, while the others continue to lockdown their destinations.

  • Southeast Asia saw an even more dramatic loss in IVAs of 98.2 percent, which significantly reduced the volume of foreign arrivals to a little over 600,000 in this period. Five out of eight reporting destinations posted an aggregate contraction of more than 17 million arrivals, led by Malaysia with a decline of 6.7 million arrivals over that same period.

  • IVAs into West Asia contracted by 75 percent and registered a combined loss of close to 16 million arrivals during 3Q2020. As Turkey is the dominant destination within the sub-region, it suffered the most reduction in inbound volume of almost 13.5 million, accounting for 85 percent of the overall sub-regional loss.

  • In the Pacific region, with an over 98 percent contraction in IVAs during this quarter, the total inbound count into the region fell to less than 120,000. Australia and Hawaii, the two largest destinations by IVA volume, had the largest decline in foreign arrivals, accounting for almost three-quarters (72.8%) of the total shortfall for the same period.

  • In terms of source markets, five out of the top 20 contracting sources by volume recorded more than five million fewer arrivals each into Asia Pacific destinations during 3Q2020, losing close to 63 million IVAs collectively. Not surprisingly, China led the downturn chart with a severe loss of over 30 million visitors into Asia Pacific for the quarter, well above the losses from the other major source markets.
