Effective From 1 September 2021, the Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) Has Been Renamed as Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU)

Hong Kong, 9th September, 2021 - Established by the Hong Kong Government in 1989 as a provider of distance education, The Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) began offering full-time programmes in 2001. Over the years OUHK have grown into a leader in open and flexible education in the Asia Pacific region, and our full-time face-to-face programmes for qualified secondary school leavers are on par with other established universities across Hong Kong. The University today is a young, dynamic, full-fledged university.

Despite the transformation, many people still perceive OUHK as a purely distance education institution, partly because of our success in offering such programmes in the earlier years, and partly because of the title of “Open University”, which places us in the generic category of universities established for offering open access education normally through distance delivery mode. This has posed challenges and hindered further development of the University and its graduates.

A recent review indicates that the University needs a more appropriate title to better reflect its current status, focuses and strengths, and to facilitate its further development. After thorough and in-depth deliberation, OUHK has been renamed as Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) effective from 1 September 2021.

HKMU comprises seven Schools, i.e. Lee Shau Kee School of Business and Administration, School of Arts and Social Sciences, School of Education and Languages, School of Nursing and Health Studies, School of Science and Technology, School of Open Learning, and Li Ka Shing School of Professional and Continuing Education. A wide range of innovative, professional and industry-responsive programmes to about 10,000 full-time undergraduates, 1,900 postgraduates and 8,700 part-time students are offered.
