LightBlue: “Planting the Seeds”: The Next Generation of Hospitality Leaders

Leeurwaden, Netherlands – 4 September, 2023 – 91% of students, according to UNESCO, believe that their place of study should actively incorporate and promote sustainable development. A statement embraced by NHL Stenden by their decision to enroll over 500+ students and lecturers into the online course on Food Waste Prevention designed by LightBlue.

"Our students are very excited about working through the program,” said Paulo de Tiège, Program Manager AD/BA/MA at NHL Stenden Hotel Management School.

This commitment from a leading hotel management institution comes as a growing grassroots call to tackle climate change, which is intimately tied to food waste and its GHG emissions. By integrating sustainability courses and practices into its hotel management curriculum, the university aims to position its graduates as the new leaders in the field, empowering them to effectively tackle current and future challenges.

With an overall satisfaction score of 89%, the course seems to deeply resonate with students.

“It was a great opportunity for me to learn how to prevent food waste and take part in creating a more sustainable world,” said Velichko Y., a student at NHL Stenden. “I am certain that it will benefit me in the future because food waste is a battle that we need to win!”

The program consists of two complementary phases that provide an interactive and engaging learning & practical experience.

Phase 1: Education - LightBlue Learning: An intimate and thorough understanding of the problem. Which is addressed and delivered by our LightBlue Learning online courses, designed by F&B Professionals to empower users with digestible knowledge and insider insights to combat food waste.

“I gained a deep understanding of the significance of food waste prevention,” stated Jaro K., a student at NHL Stenden. “I learned various effective strategies for reducing waste in the hospitality industry and I believe that this course has equipped me with the knowledge and skills required to make a positive impact in my professional life.”

Phase 2: Practical Implementation – FIT & The PLEDGE: After being empowered with the know-how, the participants will successfully integrate FIT and the PLEDGETM on Food Waste into two kitchens at their very own campus. Monitor Food Waste with FIT and use The PLEDGE certification’s framework to provide hands-on experience to students. This will demonstrate that academic institutions are open to integrating these solutions that resonate deeply with the mindful students of the future.

"In today’s world, sustainability and environmental consciousness are crucial aspects for the hospitality industry” said Tygo K., another fellow student at the university, reflecting on the course and its importance going forward.

The number of enrolled in NHL Stenden is set to grow with the latest batch on September 4th, 2023, demonstrating the continued commitment to their students.
