Join ASSET-H&C upcoming webinar “Preparing For Tomorrow: Empowering Young Workers For A Resilient Tourism Industry”

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, 22nd October, 2020 - The Association of Southeast Asian Social Enterprises for Training in Hospitality & Catering – ASSET- H&C – is holding the Webinar “Preparing For Tomorrow: Empowering Young Workers For A Resilient Tourism Industry” on November 10th, 2020 at 4.00 PM (GMT+7). The event will be co-organized with the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA).

“Tourism will not move away from being a ‘people industry’ but ways of working and serving customers will be different. Rather than length of service experience, core knowledge, attitude towards customer service and new ways of working will be key to success” Ms. Orapin Musiknavabutr, Group Director of People & Culture, Anantara Vacation Club | Minor Hotels and speaker at the conference.

The tourism sector has been one of the most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has put numerous jobs at risk throughout the whole value chain. Young people, who represent a considerable part of the industry workforce, are highly impacted by drastic decline in tourism, especially vulnerable youth, often found amongst women, minority groups, and migrants. According to ILO’s most recent data, three in four young workers worldwide are engaged in informal employment1 . In most cases, these jobs are characterized by precarious working conditions, instability, a lack of legal and social protection, thus leaving workers especially vulnerable to the negative impacts of the COVID-19 crisis2.

COVID-19 has created a necessity and an opportunity for the labor-intensive tourism industry to re- engage with its workforce and re-invent the workplace. As critical agents for change, youth can play a significant role in enhancing the sector’s capacity to face and overcome challenges. Greater investment in human capital is key to empower them to do so.

The objective of the webinar is to discuss how to encourage and further develop a human-centered approach to the crisis and to the sector’s recovery, especially with reference to youth employment. The webinar will feature speakers from the private sector and civil society organizations, as well as governmental actors and academics.

Join us to discuss along with speakers from the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, the International Labor Organization, Minor Hotels, Soneva Resorts, and the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance (formerly known as International Tourism Partnership), the following topics:

❖ New trends and opportunities that emerged from the crisis and their impact on the workforce

❖ The inclusion of vulnerable groups in recovery measures

❖ Decent work as a business competitive advantage

The annual event has always been an awaited cross-learning and networking opportunity for the network’s member schools and influential partners in the tourism and hospitality sector. Due to travel restrictions, this year's event is hosted online. It will be followed by a 30-minute virtual networking session.
