PATA University of Girona EMTM Student Chapter: Let’s Play the Interview Game this Christmas!

Girona, Spain, December 15th, 2022 - On Thursday, December 15th, 2022, the third executive committee of the University of Girona EMTM PATA Student Chapter filled with fresh ideas and utmost excitement- held their first-ever event of the current academic year, Let's Play the Interview Game this Christmas. The event was brought with a concept of a seminar and a workshop that aimed to help the participant not only develop but also enhance their skills to help them during a professional interview. At this critical stage when EMTM students are about to go their separate ways working on their master's thesis and applying for jobs and internships, this event intends to help the participants develop their personal brand by being in the shoes of the interviewer. A keynote speaker was invited to be the speaker for this event. Shradha Agarwal, the President of the Chapter welcomed the guests and introduced them to PATA Student Chapter, where our Vice-President Cindy Claudia introduced the esteemed speaker, Jaume Marin.

Jaume Marin, a tourism and destination marketing expert with more than 19 years of experience, is also one of the lecturers at the Faculty of Tourism of the University of Girona. During the first part of the event, where Jaume interacted with the students while sharing his personal experiences of growth and explaining to them the key characteristics that can help distinguish the participants from the crowd while applying for any position; he had something very innovative in mind for the second part which is the workshop.

The second part was an interactive session where the participants were divided into two big groups to have a role play as an interviewer and an interviewee. The first group which role-played as an interviewer represented different companies globally that were recruiting for positions related to hospitality and tourism. They were also given a list of interview questions and keyword criteria (like body language, confidence, etc.) on which to judge the interviewee. Each role-play lasted for six minutes and had 2-3 rounds so that every participant in group 1 get to interview multiple people. And then the roles were reversed, so as to give Group 2 the opportunity of being an interviewer. The workshop session concluded with lengthy applause where every participant shared the name of the person they recruited based on the keyword criteria.

As a cherry on top, Jaume presented a beautiful Christmas present for all participants, by allowing them to see others’ perspectives of themselves. For this part, one person from the participants would go up and stand there holding a Christmas ball meanwhile all other participants were supposed to write what they think of that person on a post-it note and stick it on them. Then the person would pass the Christmas ball to the next person. This last but most fun part of the event allowed everyone present to see their superpowers and realise that their opinion of themselves is often contrived.

Lastly, Jaume Guia, the Director and Head Coordinator of EMTM bid everyone goodbye by handing over a personalised handwritten postcard to each participant and wished them a Merry Christmas and a lovely year ahead.
