Communities are the faces of destinations. Monitoring post-COVID-19 residents’ attitude and support for tourism in the context of reactivating APAC destinations’ attractiveness is critical.

To seize on the risks and opportunities and as part of its contribution to help DMOs manage the post-COVID-19 rebound, TCI Research conducted 1,000 interviews with citizens across iconic destinations in Asia Pacific.

Titled Mapping the New Post-COVID-19 Residents’ Sentiment Towards Tourism, Issue & Trends, Volume 26, 2H2020, comprises 30 key sentiment indicators and a set of new specific COVID-19-related questions to assist in mapping the future of tourism as envisaged by communities.

Here’s an excerpt from the report:

Tourism growth still supported, but a “preference” for domestic visitors is expressed.

While 7 in 10 residents interviewed in the APAC cities agreed that their city should continue promotions for attracting more visitors in the future, a same share also declared that the city should limit the number of international visitation until the end of the year.

The question of “which segments of visitors” to welcome first is clearly raised in the residents’ mind, with a local/national preference expressed:

“Segments to attract in the future – the Residents’ viewpoint”
