Dr Ingrid Suter, Captive Elephant Researcher

Ingrid Suter holds a Doctorate in elephant conservation, focussing on Lao captive elephants. She has spent years undertaking community-based conservation, including work for ElefantAsia and the IUCN. Ingrid has interviewed over 150 mahouts and maintains a strong interest in working with elephant owners to create best the outcomes for them, their families and their elephants.

Elephant camps have been heavily impacted by the COVID-19 crisis. Once self-sustaining, camps have been forced to rely on the generosity of donors and government subsidies to feed their elephants and pay staff. With the COVID-19 crisis lifting in many Southeast Asian nations, elephant camps are slowly reopening to local visitors, with regional visitation expected to occur next. Asian Captive Elephant Standards (ACES) believes regional Tour Operators (TOs) can play a valuable role in both securing regional clientele and assisting elephant camps in reforming their practices to be better suited to the Asian market.

Join this webinar to learn about:

• Current status of elephants and staff within the elephant-based tourism industry.

• Elephant camp demographics: Pros and cons for elephant camps.

• What is camp accreditation? Benefits, advantages for TOs, camps and visitors.

• The role of Tour Operators in elephant-based tourism.
