Singapore Temasek Polytechnic X Bali Tourism Polytechnic Cross-Cultural Exchange
Singapore, 18th November, 2020 - In an effort to build a stronger rapport between Singapore Temasek Polytechnic and Bali Tourism Polytechnic student chapters, a collaboration was conducted at the end of September 2020. Due to the Covid-19 situation, this collaboration was done online through Zoom. The collaboration was named the ‘Cross-Cultural Exchange’, and through these three parts of an event, both student chapters hoped to also expose members to the different culture of both countries - Indonesia and Singapore. The three parts were conducted on different days throughout the week, and they are, the Island Xchange, a Masterclass in Networking and a Networking session with the Bali counterpart.
The first part, Island Xchange, took place on the 22nd of September 2020, followed by the Masterclass in Networking that was hosted by the PATA Youth Ambassador, Aletheia Tan on the 28th of September 2020. The final portion, which is the Networking session with our Bali counterpart, was conducted on the 30th of September 2020.
In the course of the Island Xchange, representatives from both student chapters gave an insightful sharing on the different Instagrammable spots and Hipster Cafés that tells a story from both destinations. This exchange aimed to allow members to discover the hidden gems and gain more in-depth insights of both Islands - looking beyond its aesthetic and quirky features.
The Masterclass in Networking was the second part of our three-part exchange with the Bali Tourism Polytechnic. This masterclass was a sharing session done by Aletheia Tan, on the tips to approach people, to start-up small conversations and most importantly, to build a genuine relationship with others. It is an extremely vital and practical skill to have, especially in building rapport in the working world. The masterclass required the participation of the attendees, and each attendee was required to craft up their very own self-introduction and share it with the rest of the audience.
To put into practice what was taught by Aletheia Tan during the Masterclass session, it was time to apply what we have learnt! This networking session was the final part of the three-part collaboration, where members were split into small groups to socialise with one another. We were given opportunities to obtain practical experience and put what was taught into good use. We believe that this is an important life-skill to have and be used constantly.
Throughout the 3 parts collaboration, members from both student chapters were provided with excellent opportunities to learn, share and network with one another. The members not only gained practical knowledge, but have also picked up pertinent soft skills such as public speaking, time management, the importance of communication and cross-borders teamwork.
Thus, special thanks to both the PATA Youth Ambassador, Aletheia Tan, as well as the Bali Tourism Polytechnic PATA Student Chapter for their help and cooperation to make this collaboration possible and a successful one.
